Literature Text

A theft from a lord
A gift to the poor
My work abhorred
A martyr obscure.

They once called me Prometheus
And thanked me for my pain.
So that they may live
I suffered a fate arcane.

Once a titan
Once a snake
I was punished to enlighten
I was broken for their sake.

I dared to light the fire
To set the people free.
I burned on the pyre
None hearing my plea.

My hands are gone
My body maimed
No more will I see the dawn
Below I sit here stripped and shamed.

I once sat beside the lord I defy
Now I stoop in a forgotten hole,
And still I ask Him why
Am I so forbidden to console.

Different from those He created,
I, alone, am hated
By those afraid of strife:
Those afraid of life.

Cast down below
Prey to the dark wings above,
I am charged to be the foe
Forsaken and devoid of love.

They once called me Prometheus
And thanked me for my fire.
They now name me Satan
And call me The Liar.
Things I referenced: Prometheus, Lucifer, and the snake in the garden of Eden.
They're all different figures but here speak with one voice.
